Music for Royal Ceremony: Kathmandu 1664

Thurs 22 June

When the king of Kathmandu (Nepal), Pratap Malla, weighed his son in silver and jewels in 1664, the scene was captured for posterity by his court artists in a magnificent painting that survives to this day. This illustrated lecture will explore the tragic historical context of the event, with special reference to the musicians and musical instruments shown in unprecedented detail in the painting, including ensembles that still resound in Nepal today.
